I've always wanted to explore the mysteries of Stonehenge

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by Stonehenge. I've always wanted to explore the mysteries of Stonehenge and find out more about life in prehistoric times. Now, after visiting Stonehenge in person, I am even more fascinated and intrigued by it. The visitor center is equally impressive, with hundreds of items excavated near the site. They even have reconstructed Neolithic houses so I was able to visualize how people used to live here! I highly recommend booking the tour to anyone who is interested in European prehistory.

It's incredible to see 5,000-year-old stones

My husband and I had a fantastic experience on the tour during our UK vacation. Seeing a 5,000-year-old man-made structure still standing is incredible! We felt privileged to explore its mysteries with a knowledgeable guide who shared interesting stories. For example, they explained the methods used to transport the huge stones from Wales. Also, how Stonehenge functioned as a kind of calendar for ancient people. All this information is displayed well at the visitor center. After the tour was done, we were back in London in the afternoon and had plenty of time to continue exploring the city.

As you probably know, Stonehenge is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is quite a popular destination for tourists from all over the globe. Arriving early will allow you and the rest of the group to enjoy visiting this enigmatic stone circle without the midday crowds. You will also benefit from a priority entrance, and you can download a helpful audio guide!

OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THE MYSTERIES OF STONEHENGE

As you approach Stonehenge, your guide will share many fascinating details about the site. For example, they will explain that two different types of stones were used to build Stonehenge. These are the larger sarsen stones and the smaller bluestones. The sarsen stones were brought from Marlborough Downs, about 20 miles away. The bluestones were transported from the Preseli Hills in Wales, nearly 150 miles away! How did the prehistoric inhabitants of Britain manage such a remarkable feat? Your Stonehenge Half-Day Tour guide will provide the answers to this and many other questions.

MORE THAN 5,000 YEARS OF HISTORY

The monument you'll be able to see during the Stonehenge Half-Day Tour dates back to 2,500 BCE. However, in recent years, the archaeologists have managed to find evidence of empty holes within the stone circle and outside of it. They have concluded that stones have been rearranged prior to the final construction, dating back to 3,000 BCE. It seems that the earlier stone circle was much wider, and archeologists speculate it might have been used as a solar calendar. At an earlier phase, it was also used as a burial site, with numerous human remains excavated near the site. Other theories suggest that Stonehenge could have served as a place for gatherings but also as a place of healing. You will learn more about the mysteries surrounding Stonehenge at the visitor centre. The permanent exhibition features more than 250 objects found at the site, including pottery, tools, and even jewelry!

What's the earliest historical record of Stonehenge?

During this Stonehenge Half-Day Tour, you will hear many stories about this incredible man-made structure. For example, you will learn about the so-called Merlin Myth, first recorded in the 12th century. In his book called The History of the Kings of Britain, medieval author Geoffrey of Monmouth mentions the legend. It is about the wizard Merlin, who found the stones in Ireland and brought them to England. How did he do it? Being a wizard, he supposedly used his magical powers to safely transport the stones across the sea and land them at the Stonehenge site.
