Perfect Stonehenge experience!

This flexible Stonehenge trip was exactly what we needed. We did not have to wake up early, and the afternoon departure was perfectly timed. The coach ride was very smooth, and the driver was friendly. We walked around the whole stone circle and took lots of sunset photos. Great tour, highly recommend it!

Finally visited Stonehenge

Amazing tour, and I'm so glad I finally visited. The guide on this tour is really good and tells stories in an interesting way, so it doesn't feel like a history lesson. There is so much that I didn't know before, so it made the tour even better. It was fascinating to learn how people built Stonehenge and were able to use it as a calendar! I heard about it before, but it was great to hear about it in more detail.

DESCRIPTION

Stonehenge Sunset Tour

VISIT STONEHENGE AT SUNSET

First, you can enjoy pick-up in London! Leave your worries behind and relax in a luxury, air-conditioned coach on the way to Stonehenge. Once there, you will skip the line to see the prehistoric monument. Your expert guide will show you around the stone circle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you will also enter it together. See the 5,000-year-old prehistoric stone circle monument at sunset, and see the sun's rays as they go through the trilithons (vertical stones with a horizontal one on top). Learn about its purpose and builders from your guide!

STONEHENGE'S HISTORY

Stonehenge's history started about nine or ten thousand years ago! That is when people put up wood posts close to the current location of the monument. Around 3000 BCE, the oldest part of Stonehenge was built, and around 2500 BCE, the larger stones called the sarsen stones, were added. One reason why it has become one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world is the fact that the smaller stones, called the bluestones, come from southwest Wales about 240 km away! The stones are very heavy, so that was a lot of work - just the lintels (the horizontal stones that stand on top of the upright stones) weigh 7 tons each! Plus, the ancient people even rearranged them. Some scientists say that the stones may have ended up in the area because of Ice Age glaciers, while others think people brought them so far because they thought they had magical healing properties. Moreover, human remains have been unearthed around Stonehenge, some of which show signs of injury.

WAS STONEHENGE A DRUID TEMPLE?

Theories about Stonehenge being a Druid temple arose, but they were disproved as Stonehenge predates the Druids by about 2,000 years. Still, modern Druidic societies claimed the monument as their temple. So, if Stonehenge was not built by the Druids, what other purpose did it serve? Well, there are a few theories. It could have been a religious site and a place of healing, where people would come to be healed. It might have also represented the world of the ancestors. Since Stonehenge is aligned with the Sun and Moon, it was probably used to tell when farmers should start sowing. Many people like to gather for the summer solstice for this reason. Whatever the case may be, Stonehenge was a feat of engineering for ancient societies, and your guide will tell you a lot more about it!

RETURN TRIP AND A CLASSIC MEAL

After walking around the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the bus will take you back to London. You will be dropped off near Victoria Railway Station. If you booked the meal option, you will finish your evening with a plate of classic British fish and chips. It is the perfect way to wrap up your half-day adventure.

Stonehenge Sunset Tour

Have you ever heard of Bluestonehenge?

There was another stone circle on the bank of the River Avon, known as the Bluestonehenge. It was discovered in 2009, and its name comes from the bluestones, the smaller stones of Stonehenge, which originate in Wales. Bluestonehenge was a smaller circle, about 10 meters in diameter, and included about 25 bluestones. This stone circle may have been used for the cremation of the remains that were found at Stonehenge. These stones were removed, and it is thought that they were brought to Stonehenge.

FAQ - Stonehenge Sunset Tour

Can I touch the stones at Stonehenge?

You cannot touch the stones or lean on them. Please follow your guide's instructions at all times and respect the rules of the archaeological site.

How long is the drive from London to Stonehenge?

The bus ride takes approximately two hours each way. This can vary slightly depending on the daily traffic conditions leaving and entering London.

What should I wear at Stonehenge?

Since Stonehenge is out in the open and there is no shelter, wear layers and bring a jacket so you're not cold, even in summer. Bring a raincoat or an umbrella, too. Also, the terrain around Stonehenge is uneven, so wear comfortable, rugged shoes. It's a good idea to bring a small flashlight or to charge your phone beforehand so it's easier to find your way back to your transportation.

Does Stonehenge have toilets?

There are no toilets at the stone circle, but facilities are available at the visitor center. It is located about 30-40 minutes away on foot (it takes 5-10 minutes by bus), so please be aware of this when you visit.

Can you go right up to the stones at Stonehenge?

Yes! It all depends on the option you book, but the Stonehenge Sunset Tour does include access to the inner circle of Stonehenge. This is a very special experience and the best way to visit, unlike a basic tour of Stonehenge, where you can only walk around the circle and miss a big part of the atmosphere.

Can I bring a bag?

Yes, but only small bags (30cm x 25cm x 15cm) are allowed at Stonehenge.

Can I bring a water bottle?

Yes, but be sure it is not a glass bottle, as glass is prohibited in the Monument Field.

What happens if my plans change?

If your plans change, you can cancel your booking of the Stonehenge Sunset Tour up to 8 days in advance. Then, you can easily rebook it for a more convenient time!
