Interesting facts about Stonehenge
STONEHENGE’S CONSTRUCTION TOOK CENTURIES
Stonehenge's construction spanned over 1,500 years. It began around 3000 BC, with additions and adjustments being made until around 1500 BC. Even before its full construction, the area was already used for ceremonies around 7000 BC.
STONES FROM ALL OVER
Stonehenge is made up of two types of stones. The Sarsen stones are local, likely from the Marlborough Downs about 30 miles away. The smaller Bluestones were brought from Wales, more than 150 miles away. Some believe glaciers carried these stones during the Ice Age.
A BURIAL GROUND
Stonehenge was used as a large burial ground. In 2013, archaeologists discovered cremated remains of 50,000 bones, mostly from adult males, dating back to 3000-2500 BC. This makes it the largest known cemetery from the 3rd millennium BCE in Britain.
STONEHENGE IS INCOMPLETE
Over the centuries, many stones from Stonehenge were removed or broken, most likely during Roman and medieval times. The site has also been disturbed by digging activities. There were treasure hunts and archaeological studies dating back to the 16th century.
DEER ANTLER CONSTRUCTION TOOLS
The stone circle is surrounded by a circular ditch, which was dug using tools made from deer antlers. The ditch is about 6 feet deep, and the bones of cattle and deer were found at its base, deposited long before the ditch was dug.
